How to Track Competitor Prices: A Spreadsheet and Monitoring Workflow

To track competitor prices, choose a small set of competing product URLs, match the exact model and variant, and record the seller, currency, price and time at each check. Compare only like-for-like observations. Start with a spreadsheet; use scheduled monitoring when repeat checks become the bottleneck.

1. Build a product-to-offer map

Give each product an internal SKU. For each competitor offer, record the manufacturer model, variant, pack quantity, country and source URL. A 128 GB phone and a 256 GB phone are different products even when the titles are nearly identical.

Treat seller identity as part of the offer. If a marketplace changes the selected seller, preserve the old observation and create a separate comparison rather than calling it a price drop.

2. Record one row per check

The downloadable CSV is a blank worksheet, not scraped market data. Its columns separate product identity, seller, item price, currency, delivery cost, conditional promotion, observation time and check status. Append a row at each check so previous prices remain available.

Leave unavailable values empty. A missing price is not zero; an unknown delivery charge is not free shipping. Save a blocked or failed check with its status so gaps do not disappear from the history.

3. Calculate a comparable change

For the same product, variant, seller and currency, percentage change is (new price − previous price) ÷ previous price × 100. Only calculate it when both observations have valid prices and the previous price is greater than zero.

Illustrative example: a price moves from 100 to 95 in the same currency, a decrease of 5%. If delivery rises from 0 to 10, the comparable delivered amount rises from 100 to 105 instead. Keep listing-price change and delivered-total change separate. These numbers are examples, not live offers.

4. Choose a review frequency

Choose a daily or weekly review according to how often you act on price changes. Record the timezone and check time. A timestamp describes when you observed the listing, not a guarantee that it still has that price.

Before automating, check the selected country site's current coverage and approve the collection estimate. brandbestseller offers source-linked comparison and monitoring workflows; available fields and collection outcomes depend on the public source. It does not automatically change your selling prices.

Spreadsheet or monitoring software?

A spreadsheet works when the URL set is small and a person can repeat the checks consistently. Monitoring software helps when collecting recurring observations becomes the main cost. Evaluate product matching, visible source links, capture times, failure reporting and supported country sites before comparing feature counts.

Do not interpret competitor listing prices as competitor revenue, units sold or margin. Those are different facts and cannot be established from a public price observation alone.

Common questions

Can I track competitor prices for free in Excel?

You can use the blank CSV template in Excel or Google Sheets and record observations manually. The template contains no live prices and does not fetch updates. Automated collection is a separate service with its own coverage and cost.

Is price monitoring the same as dynamic repricing?

No. Monitoring records observations and changes. Repricing changes your own offers according to rules. This workflow supports human review rather than automatic repricing.

Can I compare prices across countries?

Keep country, currency, variant, seller and delivery conditions with each offer. Compare local-currency prices separately unless you have a dated exchange rate and a clearly defined cost basis. A currency conversion alone does not establish the final purchase cost.
